Some notes about the different exams you can do within this course. All exams test your main English skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Renewal with IELTS. Why IELTS is the best exam preparation course to do for your renewal in Dublin

  • IELTS is open to all levels, from A2 to C2.
  • Students must be at least A2 starting their Academic Year English course.
  • IELTS is valid for two years.
  • IELTS takes a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • The Speaking section is done in front of a live teacher. In IELTS, the oral exam is one-to-one.
  • You can't 'fail' IELTS - your results are rated 4.0 to 8.9.
  • You have a one-hour maximum for the writing section of IELTS.

Renewal with Cambridge preparation. Why Cambridge FCE is the best Exam Preparation Course to do for your renewal in Dublin

  • Passing the Cambridge FCE indicates you are B2 level.
  • Students must be at least B1 starting their Academic Year English course.
  • Cambridge FCE doesn't have an expiration date.
  • The Cambridge exam is about 4 hours long.
  • Cambridge FCE exams have a 'grammar' section.
  • The Speaking section is done in front of a live teacher. You must collaborate with another student in a real, natural discussion.
  • You will only get an FCE Cambridge certificate if you pass (i.e., get 60%).
  • The Cambridge exam is less academic-based than IELTS; the Cambridge exam topics are broader, and the writing tasks are more varied.
  • You have 90 minutes maximum for the writing section.

Renewal with TIE. Why TIE is the best Exam Preparation Course to do for your renewal in Dublin

  • Available to all students A1 to C2.
  • The TIE exam tests a student’s interactive English skills. There is no grammar section, just written and verbal sections.
  • It may suit students with a lot of experience speaking and communicating in English but are not grammatically aware or accurate or low-level students.
  • TIE assesses your written and spoken English levels; separate grades are awarded for each test part.
  • The writing test takes 1 hour, and the speaking test takes 30 minutes.
  • The test is in two parts – a speaking test (OTIE) and a written test (WTIE).
  • In the oral test, you present your project, talk about your book or news story, and talk to your partner to reach a decision based on some material the examiner will give you.
  • In the writing test, you must produce two pieces. You write about either your book or news story for the first task, and for the second, you write something you have not prepared.
  • To prepare, you need to do three tasks and record them in a logbook: Carry out a short project on a subject of interest to you, read a book of your choice in English at your level, and follow a News Story in the newspapers and/or on TV or radio.

Which English exams you should choose to do with the Work & Study Renewal Programme in Dublin

  • Many universities require a specific score in IELTS to get in. That’s why it's taken by 2 million people a year.
  • Cambridge results are accepted by 6,000 colleges and universities worldwide and seem to be growing in popularity.
  • IELTS is more academic than Cambridge or TIE, which is best suited for someone preparing for University. The writing tasks, for example, prepare you for academic work.
  • If a job or university needs a specific qualification, you should work towards getting that one. If you want a certificate showing your general English level, then Cambridge might be for you, since the course will probably be slightly more varied and exciting.
