Students from outside of the EU who are interested in a long-term language stay in Ireland will need to be registered on a specific course called an Academic Year English programme (often called Study and Work Programme).
Students should be from a non-EU country, age 18+, with at least a basic knowledge of English (A1 level).
Students will be permitted to work 40 hours per week only during June, July, August, and September and from 15 December to 15 January inclusive. At all other times, students holding Immigration Permission Stamp 2 will be limited to working 20 hours per week.
The Academic Year English Course in the afternoon allows international students to stay in Ireland for eight months and must include an English course of 15 hours per week for a 25-week course with an official English language exam. The Irish Government must recognize the English Language school.
This 25-week English language course in the afternoon in Dublin for Non-EU students combines general English classes with Exam Preparation for TIE (test of interactive English) (lower level) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) (higher level) or Cambridge FCE (First Certificate in English) or Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English).
You can begin this English course, Study and Work in the afternoons in Dublin on any Monday.
On the first day in the English School in Dublin, the student must take a level test to know the exact level he or she has before being placed in a class with classmates of the same level. This ensures the student is studying at the appropriate level and has a correct progression.
Continuous monitoring is carried out to check the student´s progress.
On the last day of the Academic Year course in Dublin, you will receive a certificate with the details of the English course for 25 weeks he or she has taken in Dublin, the number of lessons, duration, and the final level of English acquired.
Students must sit an official exam during their programme, usually at the end.
An Academic Year English course in the afternoon can be renewed a maximum of two times, allowing international students to stay in Ireland for a total of 3 x 8-month periods (24 months/2 years) subject to Immigration permission.
85% attendance at the English School is a must if you want to renew your visa in Ireland. Doing a TIE / IELTS or Cambridge FCE/CAE exam at the end of the English course is also mandatory.
Some notes about the different exams you can do within this course. All exams test your main English skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
