Exam preparation PET Preliminary English Test B1

The PET Preliminary English Test is an official Cambridge English certificate that corresponds to level B1 of the Common European Framework. This test evaluates the student in common situations on a day-to-day basis. It is the previous level to FIRST (B2).

To be able to get PET it is necessary to demonstrate skills in conversations and texts related to familiar topics such as school, tourism, work or some other basic subject. To pass the exam, it is essential to be able to express your state of mind, knowledge or your opinion, both orally and in writing.

To pass the PET exam you must get a minimum of 140 points, the maximum is 159. PET Certificate does not expire, it is for life.

Exam Parts PET, total duration 2.18 hours

Part 1 PET: Reading & Writing

  • Assessment: reading comprehension, use of grammar and vocabulary in English.
  • Duration: 90 minutes.
  • Score: represents 50% of the total.
  • Parts Reading: consists of 5 parts with 35 questions.
  • Parts Writing: consists of 3 parts with 7 questions.
  • Purpose: Student must be able to read and write texts taken from newspapers, brochures or advertisements and use the vocabulary and grammatical structures correctly.

Part 2 PET: Listening

  • Evaluation: evaluates the Listening Comprehension.
  • Duration: 36 minutes.
  • Score: it is 25% of the total.
  • Parts: consists of 4 parts with 30 questions.
  • Purpose: Student must be able to understand and follow audio content of interviews or conversations between several people on common and usual day-to-day topics.

Part 3 PET: Speaking

  • Evaluation: evaluate the oral expression.
  • Duration: 12 minutes.
  • Score: it is 25% of the total.
  • Parts: consists of 4 parts.
  • Purpose: Student must be able to interact with a conversation in English, either with another student or with the examiner to demonstrate their communication skills by taking part in the conversations.

Exam results PET

You must get a minimum score of 140 points to get the PET certificate.

The exams are scored with Grade A, B or C, which means the grade you got.

Points to get for each PET grade

  • Grade A: 160-170.
  • Grade B: 153-159.
  • Grade C: 140-152.
