Students from outside the EU who are interested in a long-term language stay in Ireland will need to register for a specific course called an Academic Year English program, often called a Visa Study and Work Programme in Waterford.
Students should be from a non-EU country, age 18+, and have at least a basic knowledge of English (A1 level).
Students will be permitted to work 40 hours per week only during June, July, August, and September and from 15 December to 15 January inclusive. At all other times, students holding Immigration Permission Stamp 2 will be limited to working 20 hours per week.
The Academic Year English Course allows international students to stay in Ireland for eight months. It must include at least 15 hours per week of English for a 25-week course, with an official English language exam at the end. The Irish Government must recognize the English Language school.
This 25-week English language course in Waterford for non-EU students combines general English classes with Exam Preparation.
You can begin the Work & Study course in Waterford any Monday.
On the first day at the English School in Waterford, the student must take a level test to determine his or her exact level before being placed in a class with classmates of the same level. This ensures the student is studying at the appropriate level and progressing correctly.
Continuous monitoring is carried out to check the student´s progress.
On the last day of the Academic Year course in Waterford, you will receive a certificate with the details of the English course for 25 weeks he or she has taken in Waterford, the number of lessons, duration, and the final level of English acquired.
Students must sit an official exam during their program, usually at the end.
An Academic Year English course can be renewed a maximum of two times, allowing international students to stay in Ireland for three 8-month periods (24 months/2 years) subject to Immigration permission.
85% attendance at the English School is a must if you want to renew your visa in Ireland. Doing a Trinity / IELTS or Cambridge FCE/CAE exam at the end of the English course is also mandatory.
Here are some notes about the different exams you can take in this course. All exams test your main English skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
